IELTS Life Skills Overview

This test is introduced recently, to assess the English level of people, applying to UK in specific categories. It is for those who need to prove their English Speaking and Listening skills at Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) levels A1 or B1. The test assesses your Listening and speaking Skills.

This a short test of 16-18 min for A1 level and 20-22 min for B1 level. The result is declared within 7 days. The test report form is sent to you indicating either ‘Pass’ or ‘Fail’. If your test result is fail then you cannot use your test for visa application. You can retake the test according to your convenience. There is no restriction. If you pass IELTS life skills then you cannot retake it at same level for next 2 years.

IELTS Life Skills Test Format

The test is available at two levels:

IELTS Life Skills- A1 Speaking and Listening

IELTS Life Skills- B1 Speaking and Listening

The test taker takes the test with an examiner and with one other test taker.

The tasks in IELTS Life skills are designed to reflect the everyday experience of communicating in an English speaking country.

You will be expected to take part in short discussions on everyday subjects including:

  • Personal details/experiences
  • Family and friends
  • Buying goods
  • Work
  • Health
  • Leisure
  • Education/training
  • Transport
  • Housing
  • Weather

A certified IELTS Examiner will assess your performance throughout the speaking and listening test based on the following criteria:

  • Obtaining information
  • Conveying information
  • Speaking to communicate
  • Engaging in discussion

IELTS Life Skills at SLIG

Orientation is the route, for better understanding, to every test preparation. Student is introduced to the test format and skills and strategies, required for the test are shared.

As this test assesses the Listening and Speaking Skills of the test taker, so the focus is laid on developing receptive and productive skills of language learners. For listening practice, student is made to listen to different short tracks. Then questions related to those tracks are given to solve. One is trained to listen to and understand various accents so that there is no problem faced during the test. Speaking practice is done in one to one session, based on the actual test pattern.

The practice sessions are designed according to individual requirements. Sample previous tests are shared for practice. Appropriate feedback is given to speed up the learning process.

Q – What is IELTS Life Skills?

It is a new English Language test offered by the three IELTS partners- BCD, IDP Australia and Cambridge English Language Assessment.

Q – What is this test for?

This test is of Speaking and listening. It is designed to meet the requirements of UK Visas and Immigration for certain visa and other immigration purposes.

Q – Which level of test do I need?

If you are applying to UK on spouse visa, then IELTS Life Skills A1 is the test for you. But if you are applying for indefinite leave to remain’ or ‘citizenship’ then you have to go for IELTS Life Skills B1.

Q – When and where can I take IELTS life Skills test?

The test can be taken anywhere around the world , but on specific locations, meant only for IELTS life skills test. These locations are specified by UK Visas and Immigration ( UKVI). The test taken on these locations only is accepted by UKVI.

Q – What is the test format?

You will take your test with another test taker in a room and the examiner will remain there to assess both of you. The poor performance of one candidate in test doesn’t affect the score of another.

Q – What is being assessed in the test?

The test contains Listening and Speaking part only. The candidate has to demonstrate his capability to communicate in English Language.
