IELTS Overview

IELTS is a language proficiency test. It is a challenging examination. It measures your ability to communicate in English across all four language skills that is listening, reading, writing and speaking for people who intend to study or work where English is the language of communication. Because of the diverse skills required to attain a high score, students who dedicate themselves to extensive IELTS preparation have a tremendous advantage over their lesser-equipped counterparts.
It is the test that opens doors to international opportunities. IELTS is one of the fastest growing English tests in the world. It checks level of English from international standards. IELTS scores are accepted as proof of your English language skills by more than 9,000 organizations – including universities, colleges and professional organizations across the globe.
IELTS is conducted 4 times a month by BCD & IDP supervised by ESOL University of Cambridge. Anyone who has a valid passport and wants to go abroad can appear in IELTS. The fee of official test is Rs. 11, 100/- for BCD and Rs. 11,300 for IDP.

IELTS Test Format

The IELTS test is divided in two modules. The module you take depends on the reason you are taking it for. Generally speaking, the Academic Module is for those people who are trying to get entry into undergraduate or postgraduate education courses or for professional reasons. The General Training Module is for those who need it for immigration purposes.

Out of the four skills that are assessed, Reading and Writing sections are different in both modules whereas Speaking and Listening sections are same.

The Listening, Reading and Writing sections of both modules are conducted on one day. Speaking is conducted up to 7 days before or after the test of other sections.

The result is declared after 13 days. Its validity is up to 2 years. The IELTS is very well recognized by the majority of educational institutions across Australia, Canada, New Zealand, USA, UK Ireland and South Africa.


Academic Module

This test is for those who plan to study in an English speaking country. To test their level of understanding and the ability to use complex academic language, IELTS Academic module is framed. It is divided into four sections.

Listening : The test is of 30 minutes and 10 minutes are given extra for transferring answers to the answer sheet. The candidates are tested on monologues and conversations.

Reading : The test is of 60 minutes in which students are tested on reading passages with tasks, text from descriptive and factual to discursive and analytical, diagrams, graph, text from books, journals, and newspapers.

Writing : The test is of 60 minutes, which comprises of writing task of 150 words, describing tables, graphs, charts, diagrams and a short essay of 250 words.

General Module

This test is meant for those who require a more general level of English for college, high school, employment or immigration purposes. IELTS General Training is also divided into four sections.

Listening : The test is of 30 minutes and 10 minutes are given extra for transferring answers to the answer sheet. The candidates are tested on monologues and conversations.

Reading : The duration of this test is 60 minutes in which three reading passages with tasks will be given.
Section 1 will be based on two or three short factual texts.
Section 2 will be based on two short factual texts.
Section 3 will be based on one long text on general topic.
(The extracts will be authentic as it will be taken from books, newspaper etc.)

Writing : The test is of 60 minutes, which comprises of Writing task of 150 words of Letter writing (Formal, Semi-Formal, Informal) and a short essay of min. 250 words.

Speaking : Speaking test is of 11 to 14 minutes. It is one to one interview session with examiner. Its three parts are –conversation, long speech and discussion part.

Orientation Week

After admission, student is sent to the Orientation classes which go on for a week. This is the route to IELTS, which is emphasized properly. Various skills are developed in the orientation, which are needed to score high in the IELTS. After these sessions student feels confident to dive into core preparation classes.

Pre-IELTS

We are running a Pre-IELTS course. This course is intended for those students who are not yet ready to take our full IELTS exam preparation course but who would like to prepare for the course with IELTS-type learning material and get to know more about the exam itself. This course help students to understand the concept of various skills required in IELTS.

IELTS Tutorials for listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking and Grammar

We offer highly specialized one-to-one tuition sessions/ small group tutorials in Reading, Writing, Speaking, listening and Grammar for IELTS candidates who need to improve in specific areas to obtain a credible score on the IELTS. IELTS Examination Batch

This practice batch is of advance level. It is only for those who have booked their test date. 5 days prior to exam, student is moved to examination batch, in which student will practice listening, writing, speaking and Reading tests every day. The latest speaking topics are practised. The practice material of advance level is shared at this step. These intensive practice sessions along with individual Feedback sessions help students a lot, to score well. Students are guided on time management also.

IELTS Pre-Test

Pre-Test is a general test that provides valuable practice of listening, reading, writing and speaking modules as per real examination conditions. This test is ideal for the candidates who want to establish their language ability according to IELTS standards. Candidates receive an approximate band score for all the four modules through pre-test results. They come to know about their weak areas and can prepare accordingly for the official IELTS test. Pre-test is conducted twice a month and can be booked one week prior to the test date. Please note that this test is not an official IELTS test and the pre-test results may vary from the official results.

Q – When should I start IELTS preparation?
Ideally, a student should start preparing at least 8-10 weeks prior to taking test.
 
Q – For which IELTS Module should I go for?
As there are two modules of IELTS- Academic and General Training. If you want to go to English speaking country for higher studies then you have to take Academic Module. But if your purpose is immigration then you will take General Training Module.
 
Q – At what age one can appear in IELTS test?
The test taker must be of sixteen years of age and must have a valid passport to prove his identity.
 
Q – When can I take IELTS test?
IELTS is conducted four times a month. You have to book your seat well in advance.
 
Q – What is the passing score for this test?
The result is given on the band scale of 0-9 scale. The band score depends on your performance in the test.
 
Q – How soon and for how many times can I re take the IELTS test?
There is no such limit imposed on the test taker. One can appear as many as times one wish. But it is advisable that you check you result and then do additional work on weak areas before appearing in the test again.
 
Q – Is the IELTS test completed in one day?
The Listening, Reading and Writing components of the test are always completed immediately after each other and with no break. Depending on the test centre, the Speaking test may be taken up to 7 days either before or after the test date.
 
Q – What is the IELTS Speaking test?
The Speaking test is a conversation with a certified IELTS Examiner. The Speaking test is made up of three sections. It is recorded on an audiocassette or a digital recorder.
 
Q – How is IELTS Writing Marked?
Examiners award a band score for each of four criterion areas: Task Achievement (for Task 1), Task Response (for Task 2), Coherence and Cohesion, Lexical Resource and Grammatical Range and Accuracy. The four criteria are equally weighted.
